![]() ![]() How did that shared experience of grief you and Paula wound up experiencing kind of inform what would become the finished song we hear on the new album ? Jack, I know you were kind of holding onto “If Ever” for a bit. He was sending us so many different tones and different ideas for the melody. He was like, “Alright, I’m going to send you options in a few hours.” He got so into it. Especially when we were like, “Can you do it today?” But Ben was sweet. Paula’s record was done and we were trying to add one more song onto it. We were trying to get the song done fast. Paula and I were in the studio and started kind of hearing this counter melody on the top and we just reached out to Ben. We had been going back and forth on the lyrics and the mix and the melodies. Ben and I had just recorded a song together that’s going to be on a project of his. So I did a lot of different little recordings with friends and what not. During that last year a lot of people were at home and had time to record. But, in a strange way, it’s also kind of inspired a lot of collaboration. JACK JOHNSON: It’s a different thing not being in the same room with people. So having Ben jump on the track was pretty much like a dream come true. And I’m really looking forward to seeing how that affects the people that are drawn to the music. I feel like it’s going to help people feel so many things and deal with so many issues that they have in their lives. ![]() A lot of the songs on the album kind of help with those emotions. I know that, personally, whenever I feel something, I look for a song that can fit that emotion. And music is one of those key elements in life that can help people express the emotions or thoughts or feelings that they have. PAULA FUGA: It’s so important, you know? People are open and looking for ways to figure things out. Especially after what so many people have experienced over the course of the last year, how important was it to strike that chord? It really sets the pace in terms of establishing that positivity that really kind of defines the record for me. “Just a Little Bit” is such an uplifting song to start the album.
